If people colonize Mars, how would they get power? NASA is working on that. They are testing a compact nuclear power plant that would work in the harsh Martian environment. Five mini reactors called Kilopowers would provide energy to power a small habitat, produce oxygen and rocket fuel, and purify water!

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft captured a fascinating image before its mission ended. One of Saturn’s moons named Enceladus is spewing geysers of water from its southern pole! Scientists also think the moon’s interior might stay warm. Warmth and liquid water open up the possibility that life could exist close to the moon’s core!

Starting in February, NASA’s Kennedy Space Center will have a new attraction. The Astronaut Training Experience will offer visitors the chance to simulate living in space. Rookie astronauts can try Spacewalk Training, working in the Mars Botany or Engineering Labs, or the Land and Drive on Mars full-motion simulator. I can’t wait!

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’Apai is Earth’s youngest island, formed by an erupting volcano in the Pacific Ocean in 2014. Scientists thought waves would erode it away in a few months, but now think it may last 30 years. NASA is studying its life cycle to understand volcanic eruptions and oceans of the past on Mars!

NASA’s Juno spacecraft beamed back stunning images of swirling clouds on Jupiter taken during its last flyby. One photograph shows 8 massive rotating storms, nicknamed the String of Pearls. Storms on Jupiter often produce lightning which can be hundreds of times more powerful than on Earth. Juno’s next close flyby will occur December 16th.

Students can use free 3D design software to create a new combination tool from two tools already being used on the International Space Station. The best design will be 3D printed in space! Look for the Two for the Crew Challenge on NASA.gov and submit your idea before December 19th! Maybe you’ll grow up to be an astronaut and get to use your own invention!
