Today is West Virginia Day. When Virginia seceded from the Union during the time of the Civil War, the western part refused to join the Confederates, and formed the 35th state of West Virginia instead. Okay, you learned something. Now you’re excused, to enjoy Goof Off Day. Have fun!

Art the Whole Town will Love!

Artist Matthew Denton in Martinsburg, West Virginia wants to bring his community together to create art, so he created a space in his own backyard! Along with artist David Heatwole, he held the 222 Fence Project so that everyone could paint a board on his fence. The result will be a mural with 222 individual works of art!

Hercules to the Rescue

Yeager Airport in Charleston, West Virginia will have a new employee next month. He’s a border collie named Hercules! His important duty will be to chase birds and animals off the runway. Animal collisions are a big safety hazard, so Hercules will be saving lives, while looking awesome in his safety vest, goggles and ear protection!

Teachers Teach Compassion

Schools are closed in West Virginia while teachers protest for better pay, but they are making sure kids still get fed. Knowing that many children depend on school for meals as well as education, teachers, school systems, and local businesses are providing free food for students during the strike.
